Man of the Match

2004 Cubs Football Team

The final match results were

            Cookham Panthers      5           Pinkneys Green B      0
            Cookham Leopards      1           Pinkneys Green A      1

This means Pinkneys Green A are the league champions. Although Cookham Leopards finished level on points a draw was enough to give Pinkneys Green the title as a result of their win in the earlier match between the two teams.

This has been the closest championship I can recall with hardly any of the matches a foregone conclusion. In the end the two top teams could only be separated by Pinkneys Green's win in the first match with Cookham Leopards. Tough luck Cookham, so near and yet so far.

Cookham Leopards made all the running in the first half and carved out two or three good chances before taking the lead on the stroke of half time when Al Beveridge got the final touch in a goal mouth scramble.

The second half was interrupted by three lengthy stops for injuries and Cookham Leopards could not rediscover their first half flair. The all important goal came towards the end of normal time when Pinkneys Green's Charlie Fidler launched a thirty yard lob into the top corner of the goal. Pinkneys Green still had to negotiate seven minutes of injury time under severe pressure but their defence held firm with goalkeeper Max O'Connor producing a faultless display.
