Climbing Weekend
On Friday, the Berkshire Jamboree Unit meet at Youlbery in Oxfordshire.
When we arrived at the site it was already dark so putting up tents was fun. When we had finished putting up the tents we meet up with the Oxfordshire Jamboree Unit for games and then we had a BBQ then went to bed.
On the Saturday we set up the Archway that we will construct on the actual Jamboree. Then we started on our activities, which included Orienteering, Climbing and organising the activity night for the Jamboree.
In the evening the leaders tried to poison us with cement like instant
mashed potato and uncooked sausages followed by what they called
"trifle" but we called horse manure. To sum this meal up in one
word, we would say "MANKY". But luckily we had brought some caramel fudge cake so we didn’t starve. Then we went to the Campfire.
On the Sunday we had a breakfast chase which involved an orienteering style chase. Then we put the finishing touches to our activity night and got the Oxfordshire scouts to test it out. After that we packed up and went home.

14th July
We all met for a Social day on the river Thames near Reading where we built rafts, went kayaking, canoeing and rowing. We all messed about in the river at the end after a nice barbeque. Everyone got wet, even Sue Clarkson. I am proud to say that I was the last person to be thrown in the river!
28th June
We had another character building weekend with the Berkshire Jamboree
Unit. Over the weekend which was held at Avago Water Activies site at
Tilehurst, Reading, we took part in a number of different water sports.
Among these were - kayaking, canoeing and sailing. A good time was had by
everyone and we are all very much looking forward to the ever nearing
jamboree!
On Wednesday 8th May we were called for a
meeting at Earlywood Scout Hall in Ascot where we found out where we will
be going for home hospitality (HOHO).
HOHO is what every Scout taking part in the Jamboree will be involved in.
It gives us the chance to learn the customs of the locals of the country
we visit.
For 4 days after the actual Jamboree in Thailand we will be staying in
pairs at various houses in The Philippines.
Each house has been checked by an authority (approved by the Scouts) so
we know that we will be well looked after.
At the meeting we were asked to fill in a form telling our leaders who we
would most like to spend our 4 days in The Philippines with. As I have
made so many really good new friends, this was a very hard choice. We had
to put down the names of 3 Scouts and Sue will let us know soon who each
of us will be with.
We were told that the Phillipine people think that the British are quite
rude, so we'll have to make them change their minds about us. They do
speak English but we need to learn some useful phrases such as
Please - Pah-kee
Thank you - Sahla-mat
so that's a good start.
We don't know yet, exactly what Island we'll be on - It could be Luzon,
Visaya or Mindanao. The Philippines lie right in the heart of South East
Asia, between the Pacific Ocian and the South China Sea which will be
quite a trip for us from the camp in Thailand.
It's very exciting and I realise how lucky I am. I never dreamt that
being a Scout could lead to such a great adventure! I hope I'll be able
to visit Crocodile Lake - its a pool for swimming, in the crater of an
extinct volcanoe, but there aren't any crocodiles (or so they say!) (report by Lee)
On Tuesday evening, 5th February 2002, the Berkshire contingent
for the Jamboree wen on a trip to Mega Bowl in Maidenhead. We had two
games per lane with about 5 people per lane so it was enough for a good
evening out!
Around 30 people attended. It was good to see the rest of the Unit.
Everyone is getting more comfortable each time we meet. I think I know
all of their names now! (report by Lee)
